We were so lucky to have Tap Root Theater visit our school today! They performed a fantastic skit on bullying prevention called "Rocks!", engaging our students and teaching valuable lessons on kindness and respect. Thank you, Tap Root Theater, for helping us create a safer, more inclusive environment for everyone!

What a magical night last Thursday here at Southwood! Our 2nd and 3rd graders put on an unforgettable performance with songs inspired by Aesop’s Fables! 🦊🐢 From the clever fox to the patient tortoise, our students brought these timeless tales to life through their beautiful voices and creative spirit. We are so proud of their hard work and dedication!

REMINDER: To recover lost instructional time from closures during the November Cyclone windstorm, Friday, March 21, and Friday, May 23, are now REGULAR SCHOOL DAYS. Please note that these are NOT early release days, as they must meet state instructional hour requirements.

In our third grade classroom, we have been exploring our world. We have been using maps and globes to learn the oceans and continents of the world and were they are placed in relation to the equator. This week we put our creative side to the test by building a model of our Earth out of paper mache! Students will be placing the continents on the globe, then label all the oceans and continents by name.
We are SO proud of all our students for their incredible work on this year’s Share Fair projects! From creative presentations to passionate explanations, it was inspiring to see the hard work, curiosity, and enthusiasm each student put into their projects. No matter what they were sharing about every student shined! Well done, Panthers!

Meet the staff Monday: today, in honor of music in our schools month, we are meeting our wonderful music teacher, Mrs. Means!
My name is Lucinda Means, and I’m excited to be in my second year of teaching music at Southwood! I began my teaching career right here at Southwood, so this is only my second year teaching in a public school, though I’ve been working with kids for much longer. I started teaching both swim lessons and piano lessons in high school. My love for music started at the age of four when I began learning piano, and I’m grateful to share the joy of music with all the students here at Southwood.

Students in Mrs. Markquart's class are mathematicians! Each morning, they enter the classroom, take care of their morning routines, greet their friends with a smile and engage in a math activity. Pattern blocks, Greater or Less Than, BUMP, math equations, and Number Club are just a few of the activities children can choose to kick start their day! Not only are they strengthening their mathematical skills, but they are practicing their social skills as well. What safe, respectful, responsible and KIND Panthers we have in Kindergarten!

Meet the Staff Monday: Today we are meeting our Kindergarten teachers, Mrs. Markquart, Mrs. Flaherty and Mrs. Harrington!
Mrs. Markquart is in her 25th year of teaching and her 16th year at Southwood. She loves being a kindergarten teacher! When she's not teaching, she enjoys spending time with her four "adult-ish" kids and husband, traveling, and supporting Seattle sports teams!
Mrs. Flaherty is in her 13th year of teaching and her fifth year at Southwood. In her spare time she loves to spend time camping with her family!
Mrs. Harrington has been teaching for 12 years and this is her first year at Southwood. She loves to read, be outside playing with her kids, crafting and spending time with her family. Tacos, otters and blue are three of her favorite things!
Thank you kindergarten teachers for all you do for the students of Southwood!

Due to weather conditions, all Enumclaw School District schools will operate on a two-hour delay. There will be no out-of-district transportation. AM/PM Buses are running on snow routes. Our early release schedule is cancelled and students will attend school until the regular release time. Birth to Five Programs: TK will operate on a two-hour delay. ECEAP and Developmental Preschool are canceled.
UPDATE: Southwood will dismiss students at 1:30 p.m. today.
Unfortunately, due to weather conditions, Southwood Elementary has lost power again. PSE does not anticipate being able to restore power today. This outage is impacting multiple building systems and the health and safety of students and staff. Parents will need to pick up students at 1:30 p.m., regular bus routes will begin at 1:30 p.m. All evening events at Southwood are canceled.
